Description
Hen and Chicks, scientifically known as Sempervivum, are a virtually no-maintenance succulent plant anyone can grow. Translated, Sempervivum means "live forever" because they are long-lived and so easy to grow. Just plant the "hen" and before you know it she'll start producing the "chicks" that huddle around her. 'Black' Hen and Chicks forms a rosette of bright green leaves that are tipped in blackish red to nearly black. Excellent for well drained garden beds and container gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 6 inches tall and spreading to 8 or more inches wide, Black Hen and Chicks is ideal for use as an accent or groupings in rock gardens or as a solo or accent in container gardens. Very nice around rocks and boulders. A fine addition to rock gardens and succulent gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 inches apart for groupings
Growing Preferences
Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, Hen and Chicks likes like on the hot, dry and sunny side. Very well-drained soil is a must. Wet soils are a killer. We suggest 6 or more hours of sunlight per day.
