Description
Adored for both its foliage and flowers, 'Black Truffle' is a North American native Cardinal Flower superior to other dark-foliaged varieties in that it holds its very dark leaf color throughout the growing season. In spring, the foliage emerges nearly black with an oil-slick sheen to it. As the season progresses and the temperatures rise in summer, the leaves turn to a shiny maroon. Beginning about mid summer, tall and sturdy stems rise above the foliage bearing spiked clusters of some of the most brilliant scarlet-red flowers of any plants in existence. The flowers are a favorite of hummingbirds and butterflies and a great choice for late-season nectar as they keep coming coming deep into fall. The contrast of the foliage and flowers is truly stunning! Loving life on the moist side, Black Truffle is a colorful addition to those sunny to partially shaded spots with moisture retentive soil. Excellent around patios and other outdoor sitting spaces where the colorful flowers and foliage and hummingbirds feeding can be observed from up close.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Black Truffle Cardinal Flower is perfect for planting in sunny to partially shaded sites with a moisture retentive but well draining soil, such as near ponds, streams, lakes and any other sites where the soil stays moist. A fine addition to the edges of bog gardens, perennial gardens, cottage gardens, native gardens, hummingbird gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and red theme gardens.
Growing Preferences
Thriving throughout the United States in USDA Zones 3-8, Cardinal Flower Lobelia isn't too fussy about soil but grows best in a consistently moist soil of average to high fertility and full sun to part shade. Too much shade and flowering will be diminished. we suggest at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day. In full sun it will need adequate moisture during extended dry periods. Plant with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food. While not a true perennial, Lobelia cardinalis propagates itself by offsets from axils at the basal foliage which form their own roots. When conditions are right, cardinal flower will happily self-sow from seed.
