An easy-to-grow and beautiful North American native flowering perennial plant, the Bleeding Hearts Oxeye Sunflower is adored for its tall habit, foliage, and flower color. The plant stands 4 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in the garden and is clothed in dark purplish foliage on black stems that is the perfect backdrop to the LOADS of striking flowers it produces from early summer through early fall. The single to semi-double, 3" diameter daisy-like flowers emerge in fiery red shades, aging to orange-red and orange-bronze shades with red centers. All colors are present on the plant simultaneously for a dazzling display of color. The strong stems make the flowers great for cutting and use in a vase or floral arrangements, and the butterflies and beneficial pollinators love them, while songbirds enjoy the seeds. Easy to grow and hardy almost anywhere in the country (USDA Zones 3a-9b), Bleeding Hearts Sunflower has high heat tolerance, so it is a great Heliopsis selection for the South and will also handle -40F winter low temperatures.
