Description

Reblooming all summer long, 'Bloomstruck' is a cross between 'The Original' and 'Twist-n-Shout', two members of the Endless Summer® Hydrangea series, which were bred for their cold hardiness and the ability to bloom on both old and new wood. Bloomstruck produces abundant large flower clusters of deep purple to vivid deep rose or any shade between depending on the soil pH. Sometimes several color shades of flowers will show on the same bush. An acid soil will create deep violet-blue to purple flowers while an alkaline soil creates deep rose-pink flowers. Strong red-purple stems and dark green leaves with red petioles and red veins turn a handsome reddish purple in fall.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound 4 feet tall and wide and producing abundant flowers throughout the season, the Bloomstruck Hydrangea is useful as an accent, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. It is also highly suitable for container culture and is a fine addition to Hydrangea gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens and pink or purple theme gardens, depending on soil pH.

Suggested Spacing:  3.5 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Planting Zone 4a, where this Hydrangea variety is not reliably winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

Bloomstruck Endless Summer® Hydrangea is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. An acid soil will create deep violet-blue to purple flowers while an alkaline soil creates deep rose-pink flowers. The plants will tolerate full sun in northern zones however will appreciate some afternoon shade or filtered sun in warmer southern zones. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. Unlike other mophead hydrangea, you can prune the Endless Summer hydrangeas at any time of year, though we recommend a late winter pruning and a deadheading (removal of faded flowers) after its first flush of blooms have faded.

Note:  Bloomstruck is an everblooming Hydrangea macrophylla species that produces its flowers from buds formed on both new and old wood.
