Description
A tried and true award-winner and one of the easiest and most rewarding perennials to grow in garden beds or containers, 'Blue Fortune' Agstache, also known as Hummingbird Mint, is an exceptionally long bloomer featuring LOADS of tall, bottlebrush-like spikes of pretty, lavender-blue, nectar-rich flowers on strong, upright stems during summer through early fall, which is sure to make the hummingbird, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators happy! Its foliage smells distinctly like minty black licorice when crushed, thus one of its other common names, Anise Hyssop. Heat and cold tolerant, deer, insect, and drought resistant...what more can we ask from a perennial flower?!
Bred and selected by Gert Fortgens of the Arboretum Trompenberg in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and a 2004 Great Plant Picks award winner, 'Blue Fortune' resulted from a cross between Agastache rugosa and Agastache foeniculum.
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing 24 to 36 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, Blue Fortune Agastache is ideal for use as a solo or accent in small garden spaces and containers or grouped in sunny borders. It is a fine addition to hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, blue theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs when established).
Growing Preferences
Blue Fortune Agastache is very easy to grow in damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun for best foliage density and flowering. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight daily. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot, especially during winter, so choose a well-draining planting site. Deadheading spent flowers encourages heavier reblooming throughout the season.
