Description

A fantastic addition to sensory gardens, Blue Giant Hyssop, Agastache foeniculum, is an easy-to-grow North American native flowering perennial that will have hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators flocking to the garden. From early summer through early fall, it features abundant tall spikes of flowers in shades of lavender, violet, and light purple that rise above an upright, up to 4-foot tall clump of sturdy stems clothed in medium-green leaves with silvery to white undersides that flash in the slightest of breezes. Its foliage smells distinctly like minty black licorice or anise when crushed, thus one of its other common names, Anise Hyssop. Heat and cold tolerant, deer, insect, and drought resistant...what more can we ask from a perennial flower?!

Landscape / Garden Uses

Growing 30 to 38 inches tall and 18 to 36 inches wide, Blue Giant Hyssop is ideal as an accent or grouping in sunny to partially shaded perennial borders. It is also suitable for growing with other summer flowering perennials in large containers. It is a fine addition to hummingbird gardens, butterfly gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, cottage gardens, fragrance gardens, purple theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs when established).

Growing Preferences

Blue Giant Hyssop is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or partial shade. Five or more hours of direct sunlight daily is suggested. It is highly drought tolerant when established. Constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot, especially during winter, so choose a well-draining planting site. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage heavier reblooming throughout the season.
