Description
An exciting new Schizachyrium scoparium cultivar, Blue Heaven is a robust, tall, and bright variation of Little Bluestem that will add a burst of remarkable changing colors and fine texture through the seasons in the landscape. Forming an upright grassy clump to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, its foliage emerges light blue in the spring, developing pink and burgundy shades in summer. With the arrival of cool fall temperatures, the foliage turns to lovely copper hues, turning tan color through winter. It is an elegant accent in small garden spaces and containers and is stunning in groupings or drifts where space allows. The upright flower stems stay sturdy through the winter, even in snow, providing added interest, shelter, and food for the birds. Highly adaptable and super-hardy, it thrives in moist to dry soils. It tolerates drought, heat, and harsh, cold conditions (-40F), making it suitable for growing almost anywhere in the United States (USDA Zones 3-9). You might be happy to know the deer leave it alone.
Blue Heaven® is a naturally occurring hybrid of Schizachyrium scoparium selected by the University of Minnesota-St. Paul.
Wildlife Value
Bluestem grasses provide excellent cover year-round for wildlife. They are also a larval host plant that supports various skipper larvae and Common Wood-Nymph butterflies. Adults feed on the rotting seeds and flower nectar, and songbirds and small mammals also enjoy the seeds.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Blue Heaven Bluestem Grass is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces and container gardens or grouped or in drifts in larger landscape borders. It is a fine addition to ornamental grass gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, native plant gardens, and prairies, meadows, or naturalized areas. Because it is exceptionally drought tolerant when established, it is also suited for xeriscaping.
Spacing: 2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid groupings or borders; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences
Blue Heaven Bluestem Grass is exceptionally easy to grow in well-drained soils of average to poor fertility with dry to medium moisture soil in full to mostly sun. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. It tolerates a wide range of soil types, from well-drained clay to sandy. Once established, it has good drought resistance and tolerates high heat and humidity. Cut plants back to just above the ground in late winter or early spring before new growth appears.
