Description

One of the hardiest and most long-lived of all Sea Holly species, Eryngium planum 'Blue Hobbit' is adored for its petite size, unique looks, and profuse, all-summer bloom. In full bloom the plant might reach 8 to 12 inches tall and equally wide. From early to late summer, abundant, unusual but attractive looking thistle-like, egg-shaped clusters of purplish blue flowers appear atop silver-blue stems that rise above the low mound of grey-green leaves. Flowers are excellent for cutting and a favorite of florists. The butterflies and beneficial pollinators will appreciate them as well, but deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it. Very easy to grow in a sunny site with well-draining soil, Blue Hobbit is a colorful and textural compliment to any garden or container. Just keep in mind it does not like wet feet, so plant in well-drained soil.

This cultivar name of Hobbit is in reference to fictional characters created by J. R. R. Tolkien.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 inches tall and a foot or so wide, the Blue Hobbit Sea Holly is ideal for use as a colorful accent in small garden spaces and containers, or in groupings or as a border in in larger spaces. Looks very nice and fits in perfectly around stones and boulders. A fine addition to perennial gardens, rock gardens, pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, and blue theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  10 inches for a solid border; 18 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Blue Hobbit Sea Holly prefers a lightly damp to dry and well-draining soil, preferring a dry, sandy, low-fertility soils. It doesn't perform well in overly rich or wet soils. Its best overall performance is in full to mostly sun. No maintenance required except to remove spent flower stalks. Highly drought tolerant when established.
