Description

Perfect for smaller gardens where lager Fothergilla won't fit, 'Blue Mist' is a compact, slow-growing flowering shrub with a mounded habit to around 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 feet wide. If you like blue in the garden, you'll love the frost blue-green leaves during summer that turn to orange, yellow and/or red shades in fall. In spring loads of attractive bottlebrush-like fragrant white flowers appear at the ends of every stem. Also known as witch alder, Blue Mist Fothergilla is a beautiful North American native shrub that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 3.5 feet wide, Blue Mist Fothergilla is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape, flowering shrub and woodland borders, and in home foundation plantings. Partially shaded environments will produce the best foliage color. Especially nice near the garden pond or other bodies of water. A fine addition to blue or white theme gardens and North American native plant gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 to 3 feet apart for solid hedge;  6 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Blue Mist Fothergilla is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance free when planted right and in the right spot. It prefers a moist but well-drained acidic soil of average to high fertility and sun or part shade. The best foliage color will be in a partially shaded environment, preferable morning sun with filtered sun to shade during the mid afternoon hours.
