Description
A beautiful and easy-to-grow North American native flowering shrub that is virtually maintenance free and highly pest and disease resistant, 'Blue Muffin', an Arrowwood Viburnum, is sure to please providing three rounds of color over the season. In early to mid summer abundant 5-inch wide powderpuff-like flower clusters cover the shiny deep green leaves. Then, if pollinated with a different variety of Viburnum dentatum, such as Chicago Luster or the native species, the flowers are followed by equally abundant domed clusters of vivid blue berries. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the foliage turns to attractive burgundy, orange, and gold shades. At 5 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide, Blue Muffin is a good fit for smaller garden spaces and ideal for native and butterfly and bird gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 5 to 7 feet tall and equally as wide at maturity, Blue Muffin Viburnum can be grown as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive multi-stemmed small tree ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen or in groupings or as a natural hedge in landscape flowering shrub borders. Also useful to frame corners of homes and entryways or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Viburnum gardens, native plant gardens, white theme gardens, wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants.
Growing Preferences
Blue Muffin Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil rich in organic matter. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering. That said, pruning after flowering will remove the possibility for berries. If pollinated with a different variety of Viburnum dentatum, such as Chicago Luster or the native species, the flowers are followed by abundant domed clusters of vivid blue berries.
