Description

The 'Blue Rain' Trailing Rosemary was named for its long-lasting blue flowers and splendid trailing and cascading habit, reaching only 8 inches tall and 2 feet wide, making it a great choice for a spiller plant in containers, as a groundcover or to cascade over walls. Container plants can be overwintered indoors by gardeners north of USDA Zone 8. It can be grown indoors year-round with sufficient light. It features very fragrant, rich gray-green foliage and dainty, soft blue flowers over a much longer bloom period than other Rosemary varieties: from late winter through spring and well into summer. What's more, its leaves have a savory flavor in many culinary dishes. As with other rosemary, Blue Rain grows best in full sun but tolerates some light shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day. Indoors, a few feet within an east, west, or south-facing window should provide enough light, and keep the soil moist but not soggy. Well-draining soil is a must. You might be happy to know that deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it.

Landscape Uses

The Blue Rain Trailing Rosemary is a great culinary herb for the garden and an ornamental for the landscape in Zones 8a-11. In the South, it is ideal for use as an accent, grouping, or groundcover in landscape borders. It is perfect for container gardens where it serves as a wonderful evergreen spiller plant. North of Zone 8, where temperatures drop below 15F, container-grown plants can be overwintered indoors with sufficient light. It can also be grown indoors year-round if set within a few feet of an east, west, or south-facing window where it will receive sufficient sunlight. It is a natural choice for the herb garden and a fine addition to coastal gardens, rock gardens, cottage gardens, and fragrance gardens.

Growing Preferences

Blue Rain trailing Rosemary is easy to grow in most any somewhat loose and moist to somewhat dry soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. Good drainage is essential. Constantly wet soil is a killer. Plants will tolerate some shade, but foliage won't be as dense. We suggest 5 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. When grown in containers we suggest a pot with a drainage hole at the bottom filled with premium potting mix or 50/50 blend of potting mix and potting soil. Lining the pot's interior with a porous fabric such as weed barrier cloth or landscape fabric will help prevent the drainage hole from becoming stopped with roots and soil media. It can be pruned regularly for shaping or use in cooking, but be careful not to cut back beyond the point of green leaves.
