Description

If you like blue in the garden you're gonna love 'Blue Shadows', a native North American Fothergilla with intense, striking powder blue foliage that stands out remarkably well in the landscape providing a cool, soothing effect. Just before the new leaves emerge in spring, this deciduous flowering shrub produces abundant, honey-scented, pure white flowers that resemble a bottlebrush at the end of almost every stem. After flower show green leaves emerge that turn to blue. The leaves retain their blue color throughout summer turning to brilliant shades of red, orange and yellow in fall. . A stunningly beautiful and very easy to grow this is one shrub we think deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Plant Hardiness Zones: 5a-8b  Find Your Zone

Fothergilla x intermedia 'Blue Shadow, commonly called hybrid fothergilla or witch-alder, is a hybrid deciduous shrub whose parents are two American species: Fothergilla major, which grows to 10 feet tall and Fothergilla gardenia, which grows to 3 feet tall. The result is an intermediate size upright shrub that grows 4 to 6 feet tall...a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, Blue Shadows Fothergilla is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape, flowering shrub and woodland borders, and in home foundation plantings. Partially shaded environments will produce the best foliage color. Especially nice near the garden pond or other bodies of water. A fine addition to blue theme gardens and North American native plant gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  4 feet apart for solid hedge;  8 feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Blue Shadow Fothergilla is very easy to grow and virtually maintenance free when planted right and in the right spot. It prefers a moist but well-drained acidic soil of average to high fertility and sun or part shade. The best foliage color will be in a partially shaded environment, preferable morning sun with filttered sun to shade during the mid afternoon hours.
