Description

One of the more heat-tolerant of fir species, Abies pinsapo 'Glauca', commonly known as the Blue Spanish Fir, is native to warmer and drier climates in Spain and Morocco. Although it doesn't like the combination of heat and humidity in the deep South, it thrives in cool to mild summer climates in Zones 6a-9b. As its name suggests, it features lovely blue-gray foliage with short, rigid needles that radiate densely from all sides of the branchlets, like a hedgehog! Equally as showy as the foliage, it produces abundant violet-red male cones in spring, which are a striking contrast to the blue foliage. Its female cones are greenish-pink to purple, maturing to light brown. Blue Spanish Fir is a captivating specimen that will not go unnoticed in the landscape!

Note: Where temperatures exceed 90°F for prolonged periods, the Blue Spanish Fir will appreciate some filtered sunlight during the afternoon, when the heat and sunlight are most intense.

Also Note: Conifers don't like being moved, so choose the right spot for this beauty, preferably one that provides moist, fertile soil and at least six hours of sunlight daily. Occasional deep soaking will be appreciated during extended periods of summer drought.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 25 to 40 feet tall and 12 to 15 feet wide, the Blue Spanish Fir is ideal as a focal point specimen or groupings for landscape borders. It can also be used to frame the corners of tall homes and other buildings, or in privacy screen plantings. It can be grown in large containers, but will eventually need to be transplanted to the landscape. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, blue-themed gardens, red-themed gardens, rock gardens, and Xeric gardens (low water needs when established).

Suggested Spacing:  10 to 12 feet apart for privacy screen, 20 or more feet apart for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Blue Spanish Fir is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility. As with many other conifers, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So, plant it in well-drained soil. It grows well in full sun; however, it will appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon in hot-summer climates where the heat and sun are most intense and temperatures exceed 90°F for prolonged periods. For best overall performance and color, six or more hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. During an extended summer drought, it will appreciate an occasional deep soaking.
