Description

Introduced and ranked as the number one Aster at Mt. Cuba Center Botanical Gardens in Delaware, the Bluebird Smooth Aster is prized for profusion of violet blue daisy-like flowers that put on a spectacular show in late summer through early to mid fall, which won't go unnoticed by the Monarch butterflies and many other butterfly species who will flock to it. It has attractive, bluish-green foliage that is virtually pest-free on an upright, vase-shaped plant with arching stems. An adaptable and easy-to-grow North American native, Bluebird thrives in full sun to light shade with a broad tolerance of soil types and moisture levels. It is excellent as a grouping or specimen in perennial borders or as a drift in larger spaces, and is one of those flowering plants that will always have you looking forward to its glorious fall flower show.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing upright to about 3 to 4 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, the Bluebird Aster is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces, or groups or drifts in larger spaces. It is also suitable as a solo or combined with other late summer to early fall bloomers in container gardens. A fine addition to perennial gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, native gardens, wildlife and wildflower gardens, prairie and meadow gardens, and purple theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  24" for mass plantings

Growing Preferences

The Bluebird Aster is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, whether acidic or alkaline, in full to mostly sun. Six or more hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested for the best flowering and overall performance. Morning sun is a must. Once established, it has good drought tolerance, but will appreciate occasional watering during extended summer drought. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. In late spring, if desired and before the end of June, plants can be pruned back to six inches in height to form a denser, shorter plant
