Description

If you are looking for best-of-the-best flowering perennial plants that will draw in hummingbirds, Salvia is a must-have plant for your hummingbird garden! A hardy perennial in USDA Zones 8a-10b, the Smokey Jazz Salvia blooms from spring through fall. In zones north of 8a, you can grow it as an annual in garden beds, or containers that can be overwintered indoors and moved back outside when temperatures warm in spring and all chances of frost have passed. Perfectly designed for hummingbirds, the boysenberry-purple colored tubular flowers, which look like an opened pelican beak, are presented on clustered spikes from mid to late spring through late fall to early winter. This selection of the hardy salvia differs from the norm in that the calyx (the little cup that holds the open flower) is black instead of the usual green. Handsome, thick, quilted green leaves on plants 3 feet tall and equally wide showcase the flowers. Excellent in garden beds or pots, planters, and other containers, Smokey Jazz is perfect for situating on or around sunny to partially shaded patios and other outdoor living spaces where you can view the hummers and butterflies feeding from close up.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 3 feet tall and wide, Smokey Jazz Salvia is ideal for growing in garden beds or large pots, planters, and other containers 18 inches or more in diameter. Plant near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor living spaces where the unusual flowers and hummingbirds feeding can be enjoyed from close up. It is a fine addition to hummingbird gardens, perennial gardens, wildflower gardens, purple theme gardens, and cottage gardens.

Note:  For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 8a, where this Salvia variety is not reliably winter hardy, you'll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be moved to an interior space where temperatures stay above freezing during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Growing Preferences

A hardy perennial in USDA Zones 8a-10b, Smokey Jazz Salvia prefers moist but well-drained soil and likes full sun to partial shade. Flowering will be heavier, and plants will be denser with more sun. It tolerates short dry periods when growing in the ground; however, it will appreciate an occasional deep soaking when temperatures are high and the weather is dry. This plant will let you know when it needs water. If the leaves start wilting, give it a soaking and the plant will perk right back up! Spend flower clusters can be snipped off through the season to encourage more new growth and buds and blooms.
