Description
A charming classic introduced in 1949, the Bowl of Beauty Peony lives up to its name, featuring enchanting, delightfully fragrant, enormous bicolored flowers. In late spring to early summer, the flowers open with a base of rose-pink petals forming a bowl filled with a dense mound of soft yellow petals on the inside. The fully open flowers can measure up to 8 inches across! The flowers are held on sturdy stems that rise to 3 feet high above a healthy 3-foot-wide clump of rich, green foliage, and are excellent for long-lasting cut flowers, displayed in a vase or flower arrangement. Heat- and cold-tolerant to -40°F and deer-resistant. Bowl of Beauty Peony is a long-lived, endearing perennial that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow. USDA Zones 3a-8b.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 30 to 36 inches tall and equally as wide, the Bowl of Beauty Peony is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or groupings in sunny perennial borders, around patios and other outdoor living spaces, or along paths and walkways. It is a fine addition to cut flower gardens, antique gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 30 inches apart for mass plantings; 48 inches or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Peonies are very easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility in full sun or part shade. In Zone 8, peonies would prefer a break from the hot, direct sun during the mid-afternoon hours. Provide at least 5 hours of direct sun for best flowering at any location. As with many other perennial plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic. Heavy, dense clay soils should be amended with organic matter to improve drainage. Because peonies grow deep roots, they are generally drought-tolerant and carefree when established. Some folks like to remove the spent flower stems to encourage the development of the small side blooms, which extends the bloom period. After the plant is finished blooming for the season, spent flower stems can be removed, though this is not necessary.
