Description

This is the single trunk tree form version of the 'Bracken's Brown Beauty', a significant improvement on the native Southern Magnolia. This evergreen grows to 30 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide and is noted for its dense, pyramidal form. The thick, leathery, evergreen, glossy dark green leaves with coppery, orange-brown undersides and its large, wonderfully fragrant, cup-shaped white flowers up to 8 inches in diameter bloom in late spring and early summer, with sparse continued flowering throughout the summer months. Birds love the attractive red fruits that develop in cone-shaped clusters late in the season. This tree form version is excellent as a specimen, for row planting, or as a pair to frame an entrance, such as a driveway.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing upright to 30 to 40 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, Bracken's Brown Magnolia is ideal for use in evergreen privacy screen plantings, or row plantings to line a driveway or property line. It is an outstanding evergreen focal point specimen, to frame in the corners of tall homes or other structures, or as espalier (trained to grow against a wall) on tall, open walls. Two can be used to frame an entrance, such as at the end of a driveway. It is a fine addition to fragrance and sensory gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, cut flower gardens, native gardens, and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  12 to 15 feet apart for solid screens;  25 feet or more apart for space between trees
