Description
An exciting new color for False Indigo, Baptisia 'Burgundy Blast' features a unique shade of of purple with more red tone to it than other purple Baptisia. We'd say the color is more of a lovely wine purple than bright purple. The abundant lupine-like flower clusters rise above and contrast beautifully with the rounded mound of very dark blue-green foliage that reaches 3 to 4 feet tall in bloom and equally as wide. Because the foliage is so handsome, Burgundy Blast can be used in place of shrubs in the landscape or as a stunning display of color in perennial borders. The flowers are followed by showy black seedpods that kids love because they rattle when shaken when dry. Both the flowers and seed pods are excellent for cutting and use in fresh or dried floral arrangements. A super easy-to-grow and extremely long-lived North American native perennial that you'll be glad you planted for many years to come!
Landscape / Garden Uses
Growing to 3 to 4 feet tall and nearly as wide, Burgundy Blast Baptisia is ideal for use as an accent in in smaller garden spaces or grouped in larger landscape and perennial borders or meadow gardens. Can also be grown in containers. A fine addition to butterfly gardens, pollinator gardens, meadow gardens, cottage gardens, native plant gardens, purple theme gardens and low water needs gardens.
Growing Preferences
Burgundy Blast Baptisia is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained to dry soil and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 4 hours or more of direct sunlight for best flowering. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established. A constantly soggy or wet soil can cause root rot. Plants can be cut back near the ground in late winter before new growth begins to emerge.
