Description
Very vigorous compared to other "dragon-eye" type pines, the Burke's Variegated Red Japanese Pine adds a foot or more in height per year with a majestic, upright, irregular form reaching maybe 20 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide when all grown up. A truly glowing tree in the landscape, it features whorls of variegated bright green needles decorated with bands of light butter-yellow in spring becoming more vibrant in summer. When looking at a whorl from above, the circular pattern of variegation looks like a "dragon's eye," hence one of the common names for this variety. The foliage does not burn in winter, is variegated year round, and contrasts beautifully with the orange-red exfoliating bark. Adaptable and easy to grow, give this shining beauty plenty of sun and well-drained soil and watch it grow to become a major attraction and conversation in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Burke's Variegated Red Japanese Pine is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny landscape borders or rock and conifer gardens. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures. Also suitable for containers that can be situated on sunny patios, decks and around other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, yellow theme gardens and the Xeriscape (low water need) gardens.
Spacing: 18 feet apart for spaced groupings
Growing Preferences
The Burke's Variegated Red Japanese Pine is easy to grow in most any moist but well drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. It prefers a moderately to slightly acidic soil. We suggest 6 or more hours of direct sunlight per day for best overall performance. Has high drought tolerance when established. It does not like wet feet so make sure you choose a planting site that has very well drained soil. Does not require pruning however its candles can be trimmed annually by up to 50% of their height to maintain a smaller, bushier tree.
