Description

Burning Love Leucothoe, commonly known as Fetterbush or Doghobble, is a hardy and easy-to-grow evergreen shrub native to Japan, adored for its beautiful foliage that changes colors through the seasons and provides unique texture and form in the landscape. It forms a rounded mound approximately 2 feet tall and wide, making it a perfect fit for smaller garden spaces and containers. It features leathery, narrowly lance-shaped leaves that emerge vibrant crimson and orangey shades in spring, gradually transition to dark green by summer, and with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall, the leaves turn to lovely burgundy and purple shades. From mid-spring to early summer, racemes of fragrant, urn-shaped white flowers add additional appeal, and the butterflies and beneficial pollinators will appreciate them. Thriving in full to partial shade, Burning Love is an excellent evergreen companion to other shade-loving plants, such as Aucuba, Mahonia, Rhododendron, and Illicium (Anise), as well as shade-loving perennials like ferns, Hosta, and Heuchera.

The genus name Leucothoe comes from Greek mythology, being one of the maidens loved by Apollo.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in an arching mound to approximately 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide, Burning Love Leucothoe is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or as a solo or combined with other plants in container gardens. In larger landscape and garden spaces, it can be grouped or used as a lovely low border, groundcover, or underplanting for trees along a shady path or around a patio. It is a fine addition to woodland gardens and looks especially nice around boulders and garden ponds.

Suggested Spacing:  18 inches apart for solid groupings or a border; 42 inches or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Burning Love Leucothoe is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soil, and in deep shade to part shade. Morning and evening sun are okay, but provide shade during the afternoon hours. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. Maintenance is minimal, with no pruning required.
