Description

An easy-to-grow and beautiful North American native flowering perennial adored for both its foliage and flowers, the Butterscotch Amnsonia, commonly called Blue Star, was discovered in the great state of Arkansas by Leslie Hubricht. It forms a mounding clump of fine textured thin leaves on a feathery looking mounding clump reaching 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. The thin bright green leaves of this cultivar are slightly wider than the species. With the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall the foliage turns to glowing shades of golden yellow and butterscotch contrasting beautifully with vivid red stems. In spring to early summer, abundant clusters packed with pretty, star-shaped, light steel blue flowers are perched atop every stem on the plant attracting both visual attention and the butterflies. A no-maintenance beauty, Butterscotch Blue Star is one of those plants that will always have you looking forward to its truly magnificent fall color show.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a mound 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, the Butterscotch Scotch Blue Star is excellent as an accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings for naturalizing along sunny to partially shaded woodland borders, in wild flower gardens, or the periphery of stream of pond.

Suggested Spacing:  3 feet apart for groupings or mass plantings; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Butterscotch Blue Star is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. It prefers full to mostly sun for best overall performance and foliage color. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day.
