The Capitata Upright Yew is a very handsome upright growing evergreen with dark green, needle-like ferny foliage that provides a unique, fine texture in the landscape. Whether in full sun or full shade, it naturally grows in a dense and distinctive pyramidal form to 15 feet or even taller, though it responds very well to pruning so is often trimmed to control size and for shaping to an even more refined tight pyramid or column. It grows maybe 6 inches per year so trimming is usually just a once-a-year thing. It is ideal for use as a specimen, to frame the corners of homes and other structures, in groupings, or as a natural or formal hedge. Our Capitata Yews are cutting grown to ensure consistency in form.

Growing 8 to 15 feet tall or more and 6 to 10 feet wide depending on pruning, and thriving in full sun or shade, the Capitata Upright Yew has many uses in the landscape or in pots, planters and other containers. Left to grow natural, it assumes an upright pyramidal form, even in old age, which makes it ideal for use as a specimen or to frame corners of homes and other buildings or as a clipped formal hedge or outdoor living Christmas tree.  A fine addition to Asian theme gardens, formal and topiary gardens, shade gardens and conifer gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart for solid hedges or privacy screens. The closer the spacing the quicker the fill. 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

The Capitata Upright Yew is easy to grow in most any soil of average fertility and does well in full sun to full shade and everything between. It does best in average to evenly moist conditions, but will not tolerate standing water. It is not particular as to soil type or pH. It is highly tolerant of urban pollution and will even thrive in inner city environments. In colder areas where there's potential for high winds, it will benefit from being planted in a relatively sheltered location.
