Description
The Cardinal Red Twig Dogwood is a colorful North American native flowering shrub providing year-round interest in the landscape. Perhaps its most outstanding ornamental feature is during the winter when its upright stems turn bright red, which stand out remarkably well in snow. These stems are excellent for cutting and use in a vase or floral arrangements. Late spring brings abundant flat-top clusters of fragrant, white flowers. Equally abundant, pear-like white berries follow the flowers. When temperatures cool in fall, the rich green foliage turns to shades of orange, red, and purple. At 6 to 8 feet tall and spreading up to 12 feet wide, it makes for a fine specimen, grouping, or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded borders in USDA Zones 3-8.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 12 feet wide, the Cardinal Red Twig Dogwood is ideal for a specimen, grouping, or natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscapes and woodland borders. Because it tolerates consistently moist to wet soil, it is perfect for those areas where the soil just doesn't want to dry out. It is a fine addition to native gardens, red theme gardens, bird and wildlife gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 7 feet apart for hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Cardinal Red Twig Dogwood is easy to grow in moist to boggy soils of average fertility and full sun to part shade. It appreciates some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon in hot summer climates.
Although pruning is not necessary, many folks choose to remove about 25 percent of the oldest stems in late winter or early spring each year to encourage the growth of new stems that will display the brightest red color. Alternatively, every 2 to 3 years, all stems can be cut back to 8 inches above the ground for total renewal.
