Description
Hen and Chicks, scientifically known as Sempervivum, are a virtually no-maintenance hardy perennial succulent plant anyone in USDA Zones 3a to 8b can grow, handling temperatures down to -40F and rarely if ever needing water. Translated, Sempervivum means "live forever" because they are long-lived and so easy to grow. Just plant the "hen" and before you know it she'll start producing the "chicks" that huddle around her. Carmen Hen and Chicks forms a rosette of bright lettuce-green leaves with reddish tips. Excellent for well drained sunny garden beds and rock gardens, or grow in containers for indoors or outdoors.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3inches tall and spreading to 12 inches wide or more over time, Carmen Hen and Chicks is ideal for use as an accent or groupings in sunny garden beds that have very well-drained soil or as a solo or accent in container gardens. Very nice around rocks and boulders. A fine addition to rock gardens and succulent gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 10 inches apart for groupings
Growing Preferences
Exceptionally easy to grow and low maintenance, Hen and Chicks likes life on the hot, dry and sunny side. That said, they are cold tolerant to -40F. Very well-drained soil is a must. Wet soils are a killer. We suggest 6 or more hours of sunlight per day.
