Description
The Carnival Black Olive Heuchera brings unique color and texture to garden beds and containers. It features a dense mound about 10 to 12 inches high and 18 inches wide of leaves that emerge dark purple-black in spring, maturing to shades of purple-green by summer. Airy clusters atop thin but sturdy stems rise above the foliage mound from late spring through midsummer, displaying pretty, soft pink to white flowers. The color contrast between foliage and flowers is lovely. Very easy to grow and heat- and humidity-tolerant, we suggest growing Carnival Black Olive in partial shade in hot summer climates, avoiding the direct afternoon sun, or full sun to part shade in cool or mild summer climates. Four hours or more of sunlight per day is suggested for the best foliage color.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a mound to 10-12 inches tall and 18 inches wide, with flowers that reach up to 18 inches high, Carnival Black Olive Heuchera is ideal for use as an accent plant in small gardens or grouped or as a border in larger spaces and along paths and walkways. It's excellent as a solo plant or combined with other plants in containers. A fine addition to Heuchera gardens, woodland gardens, purple theme gardens, rock gardens, perennial shade gardens, cottage gardens, and butterfly and hummingbird gardens.
In garden beds or containers, we like to combine Heuchera plants with other Heuchera varieties, hosta lilies, perennial ferns, and other part-shade to shade-loving plants and trees.
Suggested Spacing: 15 inches apart for groupings; 30 inches or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Heuchera is easy to grow.
Sun Preference: Carnival Black Olive Heuchera prefers part shade with filtered sun or shade in the afternoon in hot summer climates or full sun or partial shade in cool summer climates.
Soil Preferences: Heuchera prefers moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. In the warmer climates of the southern zones, plants are often evergreen, retaining nice foliage color throughout the winter season. In colder, northern zones, foliage may discolor or die back over a harsh winter. Prune unsightly foliage away before new growth emerges in late winter or early spring. Plant them with the top of the root ball even with ground level. Care and maintenance are minimal. Feed in spring with an organic plant food.
