Description
A recent introduction discovered by our friends at Western Evergreen, 'Cascade Campfire' is a unique version of our native Colorado Spruce, admired for its breathtaking display of rich, golden-yellow foliage, available year-round. What's really neat is how the new growth in spring emerges as a beautifully contrasting bright green before aging to golden yellow. More compact than other golden selections, it forms a dense pyramid 10 to 12 feet in height and maybe 6 to 7 feet wide at the base when all grown up. It is a striking accent tree in smaller landscape spaces, home foundation plantings, and rock or conifer gardens. Perfect for an outdoor Christmas tree! It thrives in USDA Zones 3a-8b in cool or mild summer climates, and Zones 3a-7b in hot summer climates. Golden Campfire is sure to be a captivating conversation piece in the landscape.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide at maturity, the Cascade Campfire Colorado Spruce is an ideal choice for use as an accent tree in sunny landscape borders, rock or conifer gardens, or home foundation plantings. Two can be used to frame an entrance. Spaced groupings are very nice where space allows. It can also be grown in large pots, planters, and other containers. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, yellow or blue theme gardens, alpine gardens, and Asian gardens.
Suggested Spacing: Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings with trees 10 feet or more apart
Growing Preferences
Cascade Campfire Colorado Spruce is easy to grow in a damp to moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. So make sure to plant this one in well-drained soil, whether in the ground or in pots. It grows best in full sun. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for the brightest foliage color. Once established, water needs are lower when growing in the ground. In pots, soil moisture will need to be monitored more closely, especially during summer. When the top two inches of soil are dry, provide water.
