Description

An absolutely beautiful weeping form of our super hardy and easy-to-grow North America native Bald Cypress, 'Cascade Falls' is clothed in the same soft and feathery leaves as its cousins but on a smaller tree. Its branches gracefully cascade like a water fall to the ground, then spreading to form skirt around the tree. We think the trailing skirt is very attractive, but if you don't want it the branches can just trimmed off. The leaves emerge a neon green in spring maturing to medium green through summer then turning to orange to copper shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. Unlike most other coniferous trees which retain their foliage through winter, bald cypresses loose their needles to show off their reddish-brown exfoliating bark during the winter months. At 10 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 15 feet or so wide at maturity depending on pruning, the irregular weeping habit ensures that no two trees will be identical, making for a unique specimen in sunny landscape borders or around patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces. Highly adaptable and hardy in USDA Zones 4a to 9b, Cascade Falls Bald Cypress thrives in sunny sites and moist to wet conditions, even standing water, which makes it a fine choice for those areas of the landscape where the soil tends to stay wet, such as along streams or around ponds or other bodies of water. That said, it has good drought tolerance when established. A truly stunning and graceful specimen or centerpiece in the landscape.

Bald Cypress is a charismatic tree native to swampy regions of the Deep South. Related to the ancient Redwoods of the West, trees in the East can reach the venerable age of 1,800 years. This selection was brought to the U.S. from Germany by an American immigrant with a story of his own, named Harald Neubauer. As a boy, Neubauer and his family fled their native Poland for East Germany when the Russian Army advanced, later escaping again to West Germany. Harald eventually settled in Tennessee. His friend, nurseryman Don Shadow, named this plant.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 10 to 20 feet tall and around 8 to 15 feet wide depending on training, the Cascade Falls Bald Cypress tree is ideal for use as a focal point specimen in sunny landscape and woodland borders. Because it can thrive in moist to wet sites, it is perfect around ponds or other bodies of water, but is equally as happy in average garden soils and even tolerates drought when established. A fine addition to native plant gardens, water gardens, bog gardens, swamp gardens, rain gardens and wildlife gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen or use two to frame an entrance

Growing Preferences

Being a North American native tree, the Bald Cypress is highly adaptable and exceptionally easy to grow in a variety of soil types, including clay, and likes full sun to light shade. It thrives in both dry or wet soils, even standing water. Maintenance is minimal to none. Pruning isn't necessary, however, if you'd like to remove side branches for a more narrow form, or you'd like to remove the lower branches that trail along the ground, you can do so at any time except for when the tree is emerging from dormancy. Training the trunk to a single stake when young can be helpful to train the tree to grow taller and more vertical. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy. Prune in late winter.
