Description
The brightest blue of our native Rocky Mountain Limber Pines, Pinus flexilis 'Cesarini Blue' is a stunningly beautiful selection featuring soft, thick and long, intense powdery blue needles year round on flexible branches, hence "limber" in the name. Narrower when young, it might reach 7 feet tall and 3 feet wide or so at its base at 10 years of age eventually forming a dense, stately pyramid 20 to 25 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide over time. Though native to the western U.S. it will adapt well in east coast gardens. It is easy-to-grow and highly resistant to disease and drought when established. Sure to be a standout in the landscape that brings a cool, soothing feeling during the warmer times of year.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 25 feet tall and 10 to 25 feet wide at its base, the Cesarini Blue Limber Pine is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as an accent in privacy screen plantings in landscape borders and on slopes, embankments and hillsides for erosion control. Excellent to frame the corners of homes and other structures. With pruning you can control the size and create endless interesting topiary forms for use as eye-catching focal point specimens in the landscape. An excellent outdoor Christmas tree. A fine addition to Asian gardens, Zen gardens, conifer gardens, blue gardens, native plant gardens and wildlife gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 15 or more feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Cesarini Blue Pyramid Pine is easy to grow in most any soil that is moist but well-drained. It has good drought tolerance when established. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some light afternoon shade. As with so many other ornamental trees, constantly soggy soil can cause problems with the roots. Does not require pruning however can be trimmed annually in late winter to maintain a smaller plant or for very interesting topiary forms.
