Description

A distinguished beauty, Champion's is a very cold hardy evergreen Wood Fern with lustrous open and airy deep green fronds that shine year round in woodland and other shady areas, even in snow! Ranging in height from 2 to 3 feet, the arching fronds have a distinct, triangular outline. This one is happy in deep shade, however will tolerate morning and late evening sun. New fronds emerge a little later in spring than other species, but not to worry about that because this one is evergreen.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing up to 3 feet tall and spreading 3 feet or more, the Champions Wood Fern is a wonderful, elegant plant ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or container gardens or in groupings and mass plantings in shady to partially sunny woodland gardens and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to woodland shade gardens, cottage gardens and fern gardens.

Growing Preferences

The Champion's Wood Fern is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soils in part shade to full shade. That said, it does prefer an acidic soil ranging from 5.0 to 6.5 on the pH scale. It prefers a consistently moist soil rich in organic matter however tolerates short dry periods when established.
