Description

A hybrid Magnolia with unusual parentage, 'Charles Coates' is a cross between Magnolia sieboldii, a beautiful Asian species known as the Oyama Magnolia, and Magnolia tripetala, a magnificent North American native species commonly referred to as the Umbrella Magnolia. It was discovered at the Royal Botanic Garden in Kew. It features abundant, egg-shaped, white buds that, upon opening, appear as large tulips that fully open to a pleasantly fragrant, saucer-shaped, 5-6" flowers with 9-12 petals surrounding a ringed cluster of crimson stamens. Like its parents, its flowers are showcased against a backdrop of large, ovate, deep green leaves that can reach 10 inches in length, appearing in whorl-like clusters at the stem tips, adding a lush tropical look and feel in the landscape. Sure to be a conversation piece in the garden, the Charles Coates Magnolia reaches up to 25 feet in height and 20 feet in width, and is easy to grow, hardy, and long-lived. We've seen no serious problems with pests or disease, and the deer turn their nose up at it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Charles Coates Magnolia is an ideal specimen for use in sunny or partially shaded landscapes and woodland borders. Plant near outdoor sitting and living spaces where the lush foliage, beautiful flowers, and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed up close. It is a fine addition to white-themed gardens, fragrance gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, cut-flower gardens, and cottage gardens.

Growing Preferences

Charles Coates Magnolia is easy to grow in moist, well-drained, moderately acidic to neutral soils of average fertility, including well-drained clay, and full sun or part shade. In hot-summer climates, it might appreciate some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Avoid constantly soggy or wet soils. In alkaline soils, apply soil sulfur and/or chelated iron to increase acidity for deep greening of foliage and heavier flowering. Pruning usually isn't necessary; however, stray or damaged branches can be pruned after flowering. Feed in spring with a mild organic plant food or a well-balanced shrub and tree food containing iron and/or sulfur.
