Description

An extraordinary new Catmint that lives up to its name, 'Chartreuse On The Loose' is a super-hardy perennial sporting glowing chartreuse (yellow-green) foliage throughout three seasons to light up garden beds and container gardens. Additionally, it is an extremely free-flowering variety that blooms continuously from late spring or early summer through early fall, which hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate. The two-lipped lavender-blue flowers are born abundantly on upright spiked clusters that rise just above and contrast nicely with the bright foliage mound. No deadheading of spent flowers is necessary as the flowers keep coming all season long, regardless. Compared to other catmints, Chartreuse On The Loose has a much sturdier and stronger habit. The foliage doesn't flop and doesn't go through that ugly mid-summer phase. At only 8 to 10 inches tall and 2 feet wide, Chartreuse On The Loose is a bright accent in smaller garden spaces or grouped or as a low border where space allows. It is also suitable alone or combined with other sun-loving plants in container gardens.

When the stems of Nepeta plants are broken, they release an aroma into the air that tends to attract cats, hence their common name of catmint.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 8 to 10 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide, the Chartreuse On The Loose Catmint is ideal for use as an accent plant in smaller garden spaces or containers or grouped or as a border in garden beds and landscape borders. Plant it near patios, decks, porches, and other outdoor living areas where the pretty flowers and the butterflies and hummingbirds they attract can be enjoyed from close up. A natural choice for herb and perennial gardens and a fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, coastal gardens, fragrance gardens, blue or purple theme gardens, cottage gardens, and rock gardens.

Growing Preferences

Chartreuse On The Loose Catmint is easy to grow in most moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. For best flowering, we suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. When established, it will tolerate dry periods but prefers moist, not soggy or wet, soil.
