A tetraploid with twice the number of chromosomes than the species, Chicago Blackout has larger and thicker leaves and flowers, stronger flower scapes, and more intense coloration and increased vigor.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Also nice as an accent or centerpiece in mixed container gardens. A fine addition to daylily gardens, perennial gardens, fragrance gardens and red or black theme gardens.

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, Daylilies are exceptionally easy to grow. Though they will perform well in a wide range of soil types and conditions, they prefer a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Full to mostly sun is preferred however plants will tolerate some lightly filtered sun or shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight for best flowering. Daylilies don't require deadheading but the removal of spent flower scapes (stems) might encourage rebloom. When established, daylilies are moderately drought tolerant.
