Description
One of our favorite Ajuga, 'Chocolate Chip' sports low, dense patches of narrow leaves showing off a satin sheen finish embossed with rich hues of chocolate brown, bronze and maroon. From mid to late spring, short spikes of pretty lavender-blue flowers stand upright covering the low, spreading foliage. The effect is stunning when planted in mass. We love this one as a groundcover to replace mulch around shrubs and small trees and between and around stepping stones in pathways.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing only 2 to 3 inches tall and spreading up to 24 inches or more to form a dense patch, Chocolate Chip Ajuga is ideal for use between stepping stones and pavers, in wall crevices, around boulders, or as a groundcover around shrubs and trees. It is also useful for erosion control on slopes. A fine addition to cottage gardens, rock gardens, blue theme gardens, Asian gardens and woodland gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 12-18 inches apart for mass planting; 6 to 8 inches apart between stones and pavers

Growing Preferences
When planted right and in the right spot, Ajuga is easy to grow. It adapts to most soil types and likes shade to part shade. Morning sun or all day filtered sun is fine. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility. Overly dry soils will require supplemental irrigation. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic.
