Description
A unique hybrid between Camellia japonica and Camellia sasanqua, the Christmas Carol Camellia brings the best of both worlds. A weeping selection, during the fall it features abundant very cute bell-shaped flowers with cheery red petals bordered in white that surround a cylindrical cluster of soft yellow stamens. Some flowers might be solid red and the width of the white border can vary as well. Contrasting beautifully against the deep green foliage, the flower buds open during fall, and maybe into late winter depending on location. With age, the branches become pendulous making for a magnificent, weeping evergreen specimen in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders and home foundation plantings. The flowers can be enjoyed indoors by cutting and displaying several in a vase or floral arrangement.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, the Christmas Carol Camellia is ideal for use as an accent specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in groupings or as a natural hedge where space allows in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. It is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. As the plant grows, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive and colorful small weeping tree. A fine addition to red color theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens, Asian gardens and woodland borders.
Suggested Spacing: 3 to 3.5 feet apart for solid hedge; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
