Collocasia 'Coffee Cups' is among the most interesting and captivating Elephant Ears we've grown in our gardens. Growing in the ground, it forms an impressive, 6-foot-high clump of skyward-reaching dark purple-black stems topped with glossy, olive green, cup-shaped leaves. The height at which it grows in containers will depend on the size of the container. The lighter green back side of the leaf sports symmetrically spaced, raised purplish ribs, adding to the overall appeal. What's cool is how, when the leaves fill with water during a rain, they eventually lean over to pour the water out. It is truly fascinating to watch during a rain. Easy to grow and low maintenance, give it a moist but well-drained soil and four or more hours of sunlight daily. Coffee Cups Elephant Ear is a striking tropical accent on or around patios, pools, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.

Indonesian botanist Gregory Hambali discovered Colocasia 'Coffee Cups' growing in the wild. Aroid expert Alan Galloway brought it to the US.

Coffee Cups Elephant Ear is easy to grow in moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. Five or more hours of direct sunlight daily is suggested. The more sun, the larger the plant grows. It prefers a consistently moist soil, but not constantly soggy. Keep an eye on plants growing in containers and provide water if you see the foliage begin to wilt. Feed in spring and again in early summer with a slow-release flower food or natural or organic plant food. It is hardy when growing in the ground in SUDA Zones 8a-11. Plants growing in above-ground containers must be overwintered indoors during the winter when temperatures drop below 50°F. Bulbs can also be removed from the ground and stored in a cool indoor space where temperatures range from 60 to 65°F.
