Description

Picea mariana 'Fastigiata' is the upright columnar form of our beautiful North American native Black Spruce. Adding on average about 12 inches in height per year, it reaches 15 to 20 feet tall and only 4 to 6 feet wide at maturity, making it a fine, evergreen vertical accent where space might be limited in the landscape. Its slightly ascending stems are clothed in stiff, dark green, four-sided, radially arranged needles that sometimes have a bluish-grey tinting. It features small but attractive purple cones that mature to a reddish-brown color, remaining on the tree for several years. Unlike most conifers, which prefer life on the dry side, black spruces will thrive in consistently moist to wet, well-drained soils. Easy to grow, no-maintenance, and extremely cold-hardy to USDA Zone 2, where winter low temperatures can be -50°F, the Columnar Black Spruce is an excellent statuesque specimen or grouping in landscape borders, vertical accent in home foundation plantings, or as a centerpiece in containers.

Landscape & Garden Uses

The Columnar Black Spruce is ideal as a specimen or grouping in sunny landscape or woodland borders. It is also an excellent accent tree to frame the corners or entrances of tall homes and other buildings. Its slow growth rate and narrow form make it suitable as a centerpiece in containers. It is excellent for decorating as an outdoor Christmas tree. It is a fine addition to conifer gardens, alpine gardens, rock gardens, and Asian theme gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  Best as a specimen or in spaced groupings at 8'+ apart. Two can be used to fram an entrance

Growing Preferences

The Columnar Black Spruce is easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. As with so many other conifers, constantly wet soils or standing water can be problematic, leading to root rot or other harmful plant diseases. No pruning necessary, Hardy in USDA Zones 2a-6b.
