Description

If you love the distinct foliage texture and flowers of English Laurels like we and so many landscape designers do, and the fact that they'll grow in sun or shade, Prunus laurocerasus 'Compact,' also known as 'Nana,' is a smaller growing selection than the species, reaching about half the size to maybe 10 feet in height and 8 feet in width when left to grow naturally with no pruning. With an annual pruning after the bloom in spring, it can be maintained as a specimen or clipped hedge to as low as 6 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, which makes it a better fit where space is limited. As with its larger growing cousins, it has handsome, glossy, evergreen leaves that provide a beautiful texture in the landscape that contrasts nicely with so many other plants, which is why designers like them so much. Abundant candle-like spikes of showy, fragrant white flowers appear in spring, followed by attractive black berries. While it grows and blooms well in full sun or shade in USDA Zones 6 through 8, we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours in hot and humid climates. Fast-growing, Compacta English Laurel is perfect for a specimen, grouping, or a formal or natural dense hedge or privacy screen full from the ground up.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 8 to 10 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Compact Cherry Laurel is ideal for use as a specimen, grouping or dense natural or clipped hedge in sunny or shady landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Especially nice as a privacy hedge around patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens and formal gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 4 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges or privacy screens; 10 or more feet apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Compact English Cherry Laurel is easy to grow in most any moist, well-drained soil of average to high fertility. In cool summer climates it does well in full sun or shade. In hot and humid summer climates it might prefer some shade or filtered sun during the hot afternoon hours. Here in USDA Zone 8a of Georgia we've had success growing it in almost full shade. As with so many other ornamental shrubs, constantly soggy or wet soil can cause problems with the roots. Pruning is best done after flowering in spring and maybe again in summer if needed.
