Description
Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Lutea Compacta' is somewhat similar to 'Nana Lutea' but with double the growth rate of 4 to 6 inches per year, a more upright pyramidal habit, and larger foliage sprays. When all grown up, it might reach 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide at its base, making it a good fit for small garden spaces and containers. Its ascending branches are clothed in gently twisting and turning feathery sprays of golden-yellow new foliage, contrasting beautifully with the mature, rich green interior foliage. During winter, the foliage turns a beautiful deeper shade of golden yellow. We suggest six or more hours of sunlight daily for the brightest foliage color. Easy to grow, the Compact Golden Hinoki Cypress is a long-lived evergreen that will light up the garden for many years to come.
Landscape & Garden Uses
With an upright habit and pyramidal form 6 to 7 feet tall and 4 feet wide at the base, the Compact Golden Hinoki Cypress is ideal as a captivating focal point in small to mid-size gardens, landscape borders, or home foundation plantings. It is also very nice in pots, planters, and other containers on or around patios, decks, and other outdoor sitting and living spaces. With this selection, the skillful pruner can create very interesting pom pom topiary forms. A fine addition to conifer gardens, yellow theme gardens, Asian theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Compact Golden Hinoki Cypress is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow in a moist, well-drained soil of average fertility, and is drought tolerant when established. It does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, which can cause root rot. It will grow in full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for the brightest foliage color and best overall performance. It will grow in less sun, but the foliage will be more chartreuse or light green with shade. No pruning is required, though a stray or damaged stem or branch can be removed any time of year. Skilled pruners can create interesting topiary shapes and forms such as pom poms.
