Description
A very rare and unique Japanese Maple cultivar, 'Contorta' is similar in its weeping habit and leaf shape and color, however it is a much more vigorous and taller grower with a pyramidal form and cascading branches that twist and contort, and is very heat and sun tolerant as well. Its very lacy and soft-textured leaves emerge a bright lime-green in spring transitioning to a medium green by summer and then to attractive yellow and orange shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures in fall. The foliage is quite dense, especially when growing in more sun, but after the leaves drop in late fall the contorted branches take center stage through winter. At 10 feet or so tall and equally as wide, Contorta makes for a stunning focal point specimen in sunny or shady small to medium size landscape spaces or containers that can be situated on patios, decks and around other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Contorta Weeping Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape or containers as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, it can be planted in spaced groupings where space allows or two can be used to frame an entrance.
Suggested Spacing: 14 feet apart for space between plants
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape...that is, if you don't overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won't interfere at all with your tree.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in the ground or in pots, planters and other containers. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, you can find a complete listing of our sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties here, of which Contorta is one.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
