Description
A truly stunning new hybrid evergreen Magnolia, 'Coppertalica' is a cross of Magnolia foveolata and Magnolia laevifolia. It is adored for both its stunning flowers and uniquely colored foliage. Its thick and glossy elongated leaves are dark green on top and a striking copper on the back with a metallic sheen that truly glimmers when it catches the sun, hence the common name. In late spring to summer, abundant, picturesque, fragrant, cream-white saucer-shaped flowers with a sunburst of eye-catching prominent yellow stamens surrounding a red eye are truly remarkable. Coppertallica is such a new variety we can't say for its mature size or the USDA Zones it will thrive in. So far, in the trial phase, we know it is cold hardy to Zone 7 and heat hardy to Zone 9b, but some are saying it's cold hardy to Zone 5. The breeder says that it should reach about 10 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide in 10 years maturing to maybe double that size. We've seen up to 18 inches added in height per year so are thinking it might grow a little larger than that over time. In any event, it can be grown as a tall shrub or lower branches removed to form a small tree. Either way, it makes for a truly unusual and spectacular specimen in the landscape and around patios, porches and other outdoor sitting and living spaces where the foliage and fragrant flowers can be enjoyed from close up. It seems to perform best in a moist but well-drained soil and full to part sun. The deer don't seem to be interested in it at all.
Landscape & Garden Uses
The Coppertallica Evergreen Magnolia Tree is ideal for use in the landscape as a specimen, in groupings or in privacy screen plantings. Also nice to frame the corners of the home or other buildings or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall). Can also be grown in large pots, planters and containers of 18 inches or more in rim diameter. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, bird & wildlife gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 7' feet for solid privacy screens; 12 feet or more for space between trees

Growing Preferences
Coppertallica Evergreen Magnolia Tree is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun, part shade or all-day filtered sun. For best density of foliage and flowering, we suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Very low maintenance and never requires pruning. That said, stray branches can be pruned for shaping purposes and lower branches can be removed to form an attractive evergreen tree.
