Description

Very similar in appearance and habit but not to be confused with Laurentia fluviatilis or Isotoma axillaris, which both also go by the common name "Blue Star Creeper," Pratia 'County Park' forms a low carpet of tiny green leaves that becomes nearly covered with darker, lavender-blue star shaped flowers in late spring to early summer reblooming in fall. This little treasure stands up to foot traffic so is perfect for filling the gaps between stepping stones or as a groundcover around roses, shrubs and small trees. Also great as a soil cover in container gardens, even container plants situated in the garden pond!

Landscape & Garden Uses

A dainty little groundcover growing 1 inch or less in height and tolerating moderate foot traffic, County Park Pratia is perfect for use to fill the gaps between stepping stones and pavers, as a groundcover or underplanting for shrubs, roses, perennials and small trees, such as Japanese maples, or as a soil cover in container gardens situated above ground or in the margins of a garden pond. Excellent for bulb gardens where plants such as tulips and daffodils will pop right through in spring. A fine addition to blue themed gardens, Asian gardens, and water gardens.

When planting in narrow spaces between stepping stones or pavers you can divide the plant into parts that will fit the gaps.

Suggested Spacing:  12 to 18 inches apart for mass planting;  6 to 12 inches apart to fill gaps between stepping stones or pavers

Growing Preferences

County Park Pratia is very easy to grow in consistently moist to wet soils and full sun to part shade. In zones 5 and 6 plants will tolerate full sun with ample moisture, preferring some afternoon shade or filtered sun in hotter climates in the South. It performs best and will fill a space faster when soil is not allowed to completely dry out.

These are the daintiest but hardiest plants I have ever encountered. The survived shipping like a champ and, when planted, went to work spreading across an area under a weeping cherry tree. It didn't take long for flowering to begin--about a week or so and the blue of the flowers elegantly complements the green of the foliage. We had some severe rainstorms early in the week but the Pratia easily stood up to the deluge. Actually, I think the heavy rain did them good. Guess I worry too much about my plants. :-) I'm seriously considering buying more of them to fill in some other areas in my landscaping.----------------------------------------------We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come!
