Description

A compact, well-branched Russian Sage, 'CrazyBlue', forms a sturdy mound that is 14 inches tall and 18 inches wide, standing up to the wind and rain. It features abundant spikes of long-lasting, purple-violet to violet-blue flowers from late spring to late summer, which contrast beautifully with the fragrant, silvery, gray-green leaves. Hummingbirds, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators will have soothing and colorful flowers during the hottest part of the season. Exceptionally drought, heat, and cold tolerant, and thriving on neglect when established, this is one of those plants you can plant in the sun and forget about. Well-draining soil is a must. Deer won't touch it either. What more can we ask for in a flowering perennial?

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing to 16 inches tall and 18 inches wide, the CrazyBlue Russian Sage is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or containers, or groupings or as a border in larger garden beds. A fine addition to herb gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, pollinator gardens, rock gardens, perennial gardens, fragrance gardens, blue or purple theme gardens, and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Growing Preferences

CrazyBlue Russian Sage is easy to grow in a variety of soils, including well-draining clay, but prefers a loamy to sandy, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH ranging from 7.0 to 7.5 on the pH scale. It is also salt- and drought-tolerant, making it suited for growing in seaside gardens.
