Description

With narrow green foliage growing in a fountain shaped mound, Creek Sedge is a surprisingly ornamental North American native plant that adapts to almost any environment, including sun or shade or wet or dry conditions. It is a vigorous clump former with shiny, narrow green leaves up to a foot in length. A long-lived perennial, it is a great native substitute for Liriope ideal for use in woodland gardens, rain gardens, shade plantings, meadows, banks, or massed as a low-maintenance ground cover or erosion controller on slopes. Deer turn their nose up but it does attract and serves as a host plant for Lepidoptera butterflies.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a clump to 12 to 18  inches tall and equally as wide, the Creek Sedge is ideal for use as a groundcover or border edger in moist to dry partially shaded to shady areas. it tolerates full sun with ample moisture. A perfect choice for use under large shade trees and in shady woodland areas where so many other plants have problems. Excellent along woodland paths or as a slope stabilizer. Deer resistant and a host to Lepidoptera butterfly larvae, this plant fulfills many functions in the landscape. A fine addition to ornamental grass gardens and shady woodland gardens.

Growing Preferences

Creek Sedge is easy to grow when planted in a partially shaded to shady moist spot in your garden or woodland areas. It will grow in full sun with ample moisture. Otherwise, in drier sites avoid direct afternoon sun. It is adaptable to most soil types, including heavy clay, and grows well under trees because it does not present any root competition.
