Description

Creeping Raspberry is as attractive as it is tough. It will grow in the harshest conditions. The looks of this plant are great, but what we like most about Creeping Raspberry is its toughness. Not many plants will tolerate dry or wet, sunny or shady, or very poor soil conditions. It not only survives, but thrives in any of these conditions. During spring and summer, the heavily crinkled, heart-shape leaves are a shiny, dark green above and gray-green below, turning a nice burgundy color throughout the cool season. Pretty white flowers in mid-summer are followed by orange edible fruits that are quite sweet. But you'll have to beat the birds to them!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing about 4 inches tall and spreading 36 inches or more over time, Creeping Raspberry is an excellent erosion controller. It creeps along the ground by forming runners which root as they go. Although it is aggressive, Creeping Raspberry is not invasive. It doesn't climb trees or compete with shrubs, and it can readily be controlled by edging. That said, we don't suggest Creeping Raspberry as a small-space groundcover, though it does very well in container gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  18 to 24 inches apart for mass planting

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, Creeping Raspberry is exceptionally easy to grow. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility though is exceptionally tolerant of dry soil conditions when established. It will grow in sun or part shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of sun per day for best performance.
