Description
Highly desired and admired for its outstanding foliage and texture, drought tolerance and no-maintenance qualities, 'Crimson Pygmy' is a compact Barberry featuring bright bright burgundy-red new leaves that mature to a very handsome deep-burgundy during summer and then a brilliant red in fall. Its smaller stature and dense low mounding form to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide make Crimson Pygmy a good fit as an accent in smaller spaces or in groupings, mass plantings or as a border in landscape borders. It's also excellent for as a splash of color in home foundation plantings.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide, Crimson Pygmy Barberry is useful as a colorful accent in smaller garden spaces or in groupings, mass plantings or as a low border or hedge in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to red theme gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs) garden.
Crimson Pygmy Barberry combines well with sedums, junipers, ornamental grasses, yucca, and other drought tolerant plants that thrive in sun and well-drained soil.
Suggested Spacing: 1.5' for solid hedges, 5'+ for space between plants

Growing Preferences
The Crimson Pygmy Barberry is exceptionally easy to grow in most any moist to lightly moist well-drained soil of average to low fertility and all the sun you can give it. They are very drought tolerant once established. Foliage coloration is more intense with more sun. As with so many other ornamental landscape shrubs, Barberry does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil, so well-drained soil is a must! We've seen no insect or disease problems. Established plants are very drought tolerant, requiring supplemental irrigation only during prolonged periods of summer drought. No pruning required.
