Description

A first class North American native flowering shrub, Dakota Sunspot Potentilla is perhaps the most floriferous of all Shrubby Cinquefoil varieties. At 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the compact mound of blue-green foliage is adorned with abundant golden yellow flowers beginning in late spring to early summer and continuing through mid fall, some say to frost. Butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate the flowers over the long season. Very easy to grow, Dakota Sunspot is extremely cold hardy to -50F, thrives in average to poor soil, even rocky and clay soil, and is drought tolerant when established. Virtually pest and disease free and deer and rabbits turn their nose up to it. A very cheerful and undemanding accent specimen in small garden spaces and home foundation plantings or in groupings or as a low hedge in landscape borders.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound to 2 to 3 feet tall and equally as wide, the Dakota Sunspot Shrubby Cinquefoil is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces or grouped or as a low hedge in landscape borders. A fine addition to rock gardens, flowering shrub borders, yellow theme gardens, cottage gardens, butterfly gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).

Suggested Spacing:  2.5 feet apart for groupings; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

Shrubby Cinquefoil is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility, including rocky and clay soils, and in full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day for best flowering and foliage density. Well-drained soil is a must as this plant does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. Amend heavy clay or other compact soils to ensure good drainage. It is very drought tolerant when established. Pest and disease free and deer and rabbit resistant. Plants can be trimmed lightly after flowers and any old stems can be removed to encourage new growth.
