Description

Living up to its name, the Dandy Man Color Wheel Rhododendron is an eye-pleaser, sporting abundant clusters of sumptuous deep red buds that somehow open to large, spherical clusters of light pink trumpet flowers with ruffled edges in medium pink with the entire flower aging to white. All colors can simultaneously be present on the same plant for a dazzling tricolor effect. The butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate the flowers. Evergreen, leather-like, rich green foliage takes the stage when it is not in bloom. Though Proven Winners list it as heat-hardy to Zone 9, we think this refers to the Pacific Northwest and other areas with cooler summers. Until we know for sure, we're listing it as heat-hardy to Zone 8 in the hot summer climates of the South. It is very handsome and easy to grow and care for. It reaches up to 8 feet tall and wide when all grown up, so give this handsome shrub plenty of room to grow, and minimal pruning will be required. Dandy Man Color Wheel is one of those flowering shrubs that'll always have you looking forward to its spring bloom!

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a rounded mound 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, the Daandy Man Color Wheel Rhododendron is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a colorful natural hedge in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. In hot-summer climates, we always suggest some filtered sun or shade during the midafternoon hours. Does exceptionally well on fertile embankments, hillsides, and slopes. A fine addition to pink theme gardens, rhododendron and azalea gardens, Asian or zen gardens, and woodland gardens.

Suggested Spacing:  5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 10 feet or more apart for space between plants

Growing Preferences

A little good advice goes a long way toward successfully growing Rhododendrons. They are easy to grow and care for when planted correctly and in the right spot.

Rhododendrons thrive in moist, well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter and part shade, preferably morning sun with filtered sun or shade during the afternoon when the sunlight is most intense. All-day dappled shade is fine. In cool-summer climates, most rhododendron varieties will tolerate full sun. Remember that constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic for Rhododendrons, whether growing in the ground or containers. Some soils, such as heavy clay, quick-draining sand, or otherwise poor soils, should be amended to provide sufficient nutrients, better soil drainage, and/or moisture retention. In containers, select a pot with a drainage hole(s) and use a 50/50 blend of professional potting mix and potting soil. Avoid using any native soil (dug from the ground) in pots. Feed Rhododendrons after they bloom with an acid-loving formula such as an Azalea, Camellia & Rhododendron Food
