Description

Daphne Spirea, Spirea japonica 'Alpina', is a charming dwarf that forms a lush mound only 2 feet high and up to 5 feet wide when all grown up. From late spring to early summer, her soft-textured, mint blue-green foliage is nearly smothered in fuzzy-looking clusters of pink flowers. The flowers age to soft pink and almost white, with all colors showing on the plant simultaneously. If the spent flowers are sheared, you can expect a rebloom. Daphne Spirea is an adorable accent in smaller garden beds or groupings, or as a low hedge where space allows. She is exceptionally drought tolerant when established and cold hardy to -30°F, and likes six or more hours of direct sunlight per day. It is one of those flowering shrubs that will always have you looking forward to summer.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing in a low mound up to 2 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide, Daphne Spirea is ideal for use as an accent in small garden spaces or groupings or as a border in larger landscape spaces. Also excellent on sunny slopes or as an underplanting for small trees such as Japanese maples or Crape Myrtles, provided there's enough sun exposure. Also nice as a front-facing plant to taller evergreens in home foundation plantings. It is a fine addition to pink theme gardens, butterfly gardens, rock gardens, Asian gardens, rock gardens, perennial gardens, and xeric gardens (low water needs).

Growing Preferences

Daphne Spirea is easy to grow in moist, well-drained soil of average fertility and six or more hours of sunlight daily. It is highly drought-tolerant when established. A light shearing of spent flowers after the summer bloom encourages rebloom. It flowers on new wood, so prune in late winter to early spring if desired. Older plants can be cut back to the ground in late winter for rejuvenation.
