Description
A very rare and gorgeous evergreen Azalea developed by the U.S. National Arboretum, 'Dauntless' is a Glenn Dale Hybrid featuring an unusual and unique flower color unlike any other azalea. In late spring, Dauntless shows off abundant clusters of 2-inch, funnel-shaped flowers with deep, purplish-red petals surrounding a scarlet eye zone. The upper petal is splashed with deep red freckles. The plant has a low, spreading habit, growing to 2 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide. This lower profile makes it an excellent choice for use in groupings or as a ground cover or low border in the landscape. The evergreen foliage emerges light green in spring, maturing to a handsome dark green throughout the rest of the year. The butterflies and hummingbirds will thank you for planting this beauty!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 14 inches tall and 3 to 5 feet wide, the Dauntless Azalea is ideal for use as an accent specimen in smaller garden spaces, or grouped or as a groundcover or border in the landscape or woodland borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Azalea and Rhododendron Gardens, purple theme gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, and cottage gardens.
Spacing: 3' for solid hedges, groupings, or borders; 6'+ for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Evergreen Azaleas are easy to grow when planted right and in the right spot. They prefer a moist but well-drained and acidic soil that is rich in organic matter and part sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sun is ideal. Moderate drought tolerance when established.
