A cold hardy Statice? Yes!....meet 'Dazzle Rocks', a perennial Limonium that can take the cold down to -22F and also stands up to the heat to Zone 9. From early summer through early fall, Dazzle Rocks features a bouquet of glorious violet-purple flower sprays atop stems that rise to 16 inches above a basal rosette of leaves to 5 inches tall and 16 inches wide. The long-lasting cut flowers of Statice have always been a top choice for floral designers, who use them fresh or dried. Even the dried flowers hold their color for a very long time. A tough but beautiful plant, it stands up to drought, cold and heat, and is a fine addition to sunny garden beds or container gardens, as a stand-alone or mixed with other sun-loving plants.

This plant was a chance seedling discovered by Peter van Steijn in a trial field in Voorhout, The Netherlands in July of 2012. Van Steijn had been seed growing Limonium gmelinii collected in from the wild in Hungary for many years and then made selective crosses to develop compacts plant with many more flower stems and this one was the result of such efforts. It was selected for its cold hardiness, compact plant size, flowers that are purple in color, floriferous blooming habit and drought resistance. What more can we ask from a perennial?

Dazzle Rocks Statice is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, and is drought tolerant when established. That said, for best results it prefers a damp to moist soil when setting up flower buds and blooming. It does not like a constantly soggy or wet soil. It prefers full sun but will tolerate some shade. We suggest at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day for best overall performance. We've seen no serious problems with insects or disease. Flower stems can be cut back after flowering.
